thought. It’s not much different with the furry family members and especially around Christmas time, when we like to add special things to our houses and menus. So, what should you keep an eye on?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"christmas-decorations-that-could-be-a-problem-for-pets\">Christmas decorations that could be a problem for pets\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>The typical Christmas decorations like \u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Christmas trees\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fem>, natural or artificial, the \u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>baubles\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fem> and the \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>tinsel\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\non them, or the presents under, covered in \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>wrapping pape\u003C\u002Fem>r\u003C\u002Fstrong> and tied up with \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>ribbons\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> could all be played with, bits chewed off and swallowed. Playful dogs may also try to pull at garlands and cables and topple it over on their unsuspecting heads. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Other pretty dangers that could make them sick are traditional \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Christmas plants\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\nlike \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rhs.org.uk\u002Fplants\u002Feuphorbia\u002Fpoinsettia\">poinsettias\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rhs.org.uk\u002Fplants\u002Fhellebore\">hellebores\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rhs.org.uk\u002Fplants\u002Fivy\u002Fgrowing-guide\">ivy\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rhs.org.uk\u002Fplants\u002F63092\u002Fi-amaryllis-belladonna-i\u002Fdetails\">amaryllis\u003C\u002Fa>\nor \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rhs.org.uk\u002Fplants\u002Fmistletoe\u002Fgrowing-guide\">mistletoe\u003C\u002Fa>. It’s worth mentioning here that all \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.rhs.org.uk\u002Fplants\u002F351627\u002Flilium-the-madonna-lily\u002Fdetails\">true lilies\u003C\u002Fa>, popular for their amazing scent and lush flowers, are a huge danger for cats because they can give them \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Flily-poisoning-in-cats\">fatal kidney failure\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>More fragrant risks are embodied by \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>scented candles\u003C\u002Fem> \u003C\u002Fstrong>(which can be knocked over and cause burns or a fire) and \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>reed diffusers\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> around the house, which usually contain irritating essential oils and ethanol.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"christmas-foods-that-might-harm-cats-and-dogs\">Christmas foods that might harm cats and dogs\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>If there’s something that really says ‘Christmas’, then it is food. Rich food, sweet and savoury, roasted and baked, full of spices, and loads of it… its temptation for our pets increases tenfold during this time. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>What should you particularly watch out for are the\u003Cstrong> \u003Cem>bones\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> from roasts ending up with dogs or cats as they may either choke, break their teeth on or swallow big fragments of them. These can’t be digested and usually end up giving them a severe irritation of the stomach or \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fhelp-my-dog-has-eaten-foreign-bodies-in-dogs-and-cats\">getting stuck\u003C\u002Fa> in their small intestine, both cases needing surgery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Other troublemakers for our pets that we consume without a care are \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>salty and fatty foods\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>, spiced with \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>black pepper\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> and \u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>bay leaf\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fem>which, in high concentrations, can cause a nasty case of pancreatitis in both dogs and cats. Mild irritations of the stomach can also be caused by \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fgingerbread\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>ginger\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\nand\u003Cem> \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fsaffron-and-autumn-crocus-exposure-in-dogs\">\u003Cstrong>saffron\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fem>. The issue with the exotic condiments and spices in our kitchen is that they get their flavours from essential oils and aromatic compounds that humans tolerate and enjoy, but dogs and cats can’t digest.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>Onions\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> (\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>leeks\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> too!) and \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>garlic\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> in large amounts, or the concentrated stock in which they cooked, can affect their red bloods cells, causing anaemia. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Other everyday foods like\u003Cem> \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fgrapes-and-raisins-toxicity-dogs\">\u003Cstrong>raisins\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\n\u003C\u002Fem>(of which mince pies are full!), \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fchocolate-poisoning-in-dogs-toxic-levels-and-symptoms-dog\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>chocolate\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>coffee beans\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>, \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>avocado\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> and \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>macadamia nuts\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> are toxic to dogs as well. Chocolate is toxic to cats too, but since they can’t taste sweet very well and are generally possessed of a more discerning palate, are less likely to eat it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Another serious risk in your kitchen is a sweetener called\u003Cem> \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fxylitol-poisoning\">\u003Cstrong>xylitol\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fem>, usually found in sugar-free foods and chewing gum, please take great care not to allow your dog to eat things containing it, it causes severe drops in their blood sugar. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Make sure dogs and cats can’t get to \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>fermented dough\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> either, in their warm stomach it continues to rise, causing them to \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fuk\u002Farticles\u002Fgdv-gastric-dilatation-volvulus-in-dogs-symptoms\">bloat\u003C\u002Fa>, but also releases alcohol, which can end in alcohol poisoning, same as when they lick spilled \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>alcoholic drinks\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Since they are much smaller than us, even small amounts of a stiff drink can give them alcohol poisoning, which is as fun for them as a bad hangover is for us and potentially leading to serious consequences like a drop in blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"other-christmas-happenings-that-your-pet-might-not-enjoy\">Other Christmas happenings that your pet might not enjoy\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>\nWhile some dogs and cats like to meet \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>new people \u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>and be in the thick of it, some will not be comfortable socialising with your guests. Especially if these guests are \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>children\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>, who tend to move fast, be quite touchy-feely and loud. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Be mindful of other noise sources during your Christmas party, like\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem> loud \u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>music\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>, \u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>poppers\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fem>and \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>fireworks\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Many dogs and cats have an aversion to sudden, loud noises and could get very scared. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2 id=\"how-to-make-christmas-great-for-your-pets\">How to make Christmas great for your pets\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Make sure all decoration is out of reach, secured or fenced in, if necessary. Watch for counter surfers who may help themselves to people food, but also what lands in their feeding bowls.
