Ask a veterinarian - Dog

My dog’s penis protrudes sometimes and is then very red. two swellings also appear further back on the penis when this happens. is this normal?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Male dogs, particularly young ones, can get erections at times of excitement (unrelated to mating). When this occurs, the penis protrudes from under the foreskin and is often red in colour. Two swellings at the root of the penis also appear – these consist of erectile tissue. This is normal. If, however, you find a small round, red, swelling at the tip of your dog’s penis that persists despite your dog not having an erection you should contact a veterinarian.
