Can dogs get ulcerative colitis?
Vet at FirstVet answers:
Ulcerative colitis involves severe inflammation of the colon, resulting in bleeding sores on the mucus membranes (colitis = inflammation of the colon, ulcerative = ulcers/sores) .
Crohn’s disease in humans is a type of ulcerative colitis. The disease that mostly likens Crohn’s disease in dogs is a type of ulcerative colitis that is mainly seen in Boxers. Often young boxers are affected, presenting symptoms such as diarrhoea, melaena (blood in the faeces), abdominal pain, weight loss, and pain/difficulty when passing stools. In order to confirm diagnosis a biopsy must be performed where a small sample of the colon is taken for microscopic analysis. .
