Why do dogs sneeze?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Dogs can sneeze due to a range of different causes such as viral infections, foreign bodies, nasal mite infections, etc. Kennel cough, a common viral infection, can result in sneezing. A vaccinated dog tends to have milder symptoms than an unvaccinated dog. Just like a common cold, airway viruses are not treated unless there is an associated secondary bacterial infection. The dog recovers on its own with the help of rest and tender loving care.

Nasal mites can also cause sneezing, more commonly seen as a reverse sneeze. These infestations tend to be self-limiting and go away on their own after a couple of weeks. Since nasal mites are contagious between dogs it is best to consult a veterinarian for treatment.

A sudden onset of sneezing can be caused by a foreign body (such as a grass seed). These often need to be removed by a veterinarian under sedation.

A veterinarian should always be contacted if there is any bloody or discoloured nasal discharge or if your dog seems depressed or has a fever in conjunction with sneezing.
