A healthy dog drinks ca 50ml water/kg body weight per day. If a dog drinks more than ca 100ml/kg body weight per day it is definitely drinking too much. The best way to find out if your dog is drinking excessively is by measuring how much water you pour into its bowl and how much water is left in the bowl 24 hours later.
Increased thirst can be caused by several things including kidney disease, diabetes, hormonal diseases, pyometra (infected uterus), liver disease, fever, certain cancer types and stress. Urine and blood samples are required to be able to find out why your dog is drinking too much. Sometimes a diagnosis is made quickly, other times more thorough diagnostics with several visits are needed to find out why your dog drinks excessively.
