Ask the vet - Dog

Does a dog suffer from some kind of deficiency if it eats soil?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Previously it was suspected that dogs suffered from a mineral deficiency if they ate soil. Now it is known that this is not the case. There are several reasons why a dog may want to eat soil. Some think it tastes nice, but some eat it when they have digestive problems, feel nauseous or have a sore throat. Be attentive to your dog’s well-being if/when it eats soil and contact us if you are worried or unsure why your dog has suddenly taken a liking to dirt.
