Lots of dogs eat bones daily and seem to do fine. There are however risks with giving your dog bones/marrowbones. Bones (even when cooked) can break teeth and often result in serious episodes of constipation that can be both painful and dangerous to your dog.
- Cooked bones shatter easily and broken pieces can puncture the stomach and intestines. You should never feed your dog cooked bones.
- Raw bones can contain bacteria that make your dog/yourself sick if unlucky.
Veterinarians have different opinions regarding bones. Some think it is fine to give your dog a bone and others think you should avoid it completely. It is wise to have your dog under your direct attention when you give it a bone and also avoid feeding it bones from species that often carry bacteria that can make both you and your dog sick (such as raw chicken bones).
