Ask the vet - Dog

My dog is coughing so much that it vomits/brings up white froth. What can be causing this?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Kennel Cough is suspected when a dog coughs so that it seems to vomit or bring up white froth. It results in a very irritated airway, causing persistent coughing. The cough ends up with the dog bringing up white froth or mucus. Dog owners often worry and think something has gotten stuck in the throat when their dog has Kennel Cough. Dogs that have something stuck in their throat tend to, in addition to cough, drool copiously, paw at the mouth, have difficulty breathing or swallowing. If the dog does not suffer any other symptoms aside from coughing fits it is highly unlikely it has something stuck in its throat. Kennel Cough is very contagious. Coughing dogs should not interact with other dogs and should be completely cough free for at least 3 days before they start meeting other dogs. A vet should be contacted if the cough does not improve within a couple of weeks or if the dog seems depressed, has lost its appetite, has a fever or difficulty breathing.
