Ask the vet - Dog

My dog has had pancreatitis/inflammation of the pancreas. Can I give it normal dog food?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Dogs with pancreatitis require a diet with a very low fat content. At present there are two diets that are used to treat dogs with pancreatitis, Hills i/d low fat and Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat. When pancreatitis has resolved you can switch to a normal diet again. It is important to be aware that some dogs relapse and get pancreatitis again when they are put back on their normal food. Most dog food contains a relatively large fat content for palatability reasons, so it is best to consult a veterinarian regarding changing your dog’s diet if it has had pancreatitis. Another alternative is to try to find a wet food brand that contains both meat and vegetables. These diets often have a lower fat content.
