Ask the vet - Dog

My dog has diarrhoea and I have sucralfate at home, can I give it to my dog?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Sucralfate is a prescription-based medicine that is used to treat stomach ulcers and concurrent nausea. Any prescription-based medicine should only be given to the animal it has been prescribed for and solely administered during the time-period prescribed by the veterinarian. Dogs that have diarrhoea should be given an easily digestible diet (such as cooked rice and chicken filet in small pieces and amounts, several times a day), time to rest and probiotics. (Probiotics come in paste and powder form and contain healthy gut bacteria your dog needs. They can be purchased at your local vets). If the dog has blood in its stool, does not want to eat or drink or is very tired it is important to seek veterinary care. The same applies if the diarrhoea has not improved in a couple of days. Book an appointment with us if you want to consult a veterinarian about your dog’s condition.
