Ask the vet - Dog

How do you know if a dog has nasal mites? Is it dangerous? How does it spread?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Nasal mites are parasites that reside in the dogs nose. An infection with nasal mites is suspected when a dog sneezes more than usual or suffers from reverse sneezing. One must bear in mind, however, that anything that irritates the airways can make a dog sneeze (such as viral infections or foreign bodies such as a grass seeds).

It is very difficult to be certain if a dog has nasal mites or if something else is causing the symptoms; there are no ways to test for nasal mites. Only occasionally can they be seen in an anaesthetised dog.

Nasal mites are not dangerous, but can be very irritating to the dog.

Unfortunately it is unknown exactly how nasal mites spread, but it is suspected that direct contact, especially nose to nose contact, allows transmission between dogs.
