Ask the vet - Dog

My dog has small crusts/scabs in its skin that are itchy. What can they be?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Small crusts in the skin are usually a sign of a skin infection. If your dog seems otherwise well and is not very itchy you can try shampooing your dog with chlorhexidine shampoo (specific for dogs and found at your vets) once a day for a few days (the shampoo needs to sit in the dog’s coat for 10 minutes before you wash it off). If this does not help alleviate the itch and the crusts/scabs are still there it is best to consult a veterinarian.

The causes can be many, ranging from an uncomplicated skin infection of unknown origin or a sensitivity, to a parasite infection such as scabies, lice or mange.
