Ask the vet - Dog

Is there any medication I can give my dog to get rid of its fever?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

You should never give any fever-reducing medications to your dog without knowing why it has a fever. A dog has a fever if its body temperature exceeds 39°C at rest. The only way to measure the temperature is with a rectal thermometer – you can not feel your dog’s nose or use an ear thermometer to accurately assess your dog’s body temperature.

If your dog has a fever, the cause should be investigated. If fever-reducing medications are required, the vet will prescribe them in conjunction with the examination. Some of the medications used in humans (such as those containing ibuprofen) are fatal when used in dogs and cats. The dose is different in animals compared to humans. You should therefore never give your pet fever-reducing medications without a veterinarian’s direct recommendation.

If you find yourself in a remote area and you think your dog needs medication against a fever, you should contact the closest veterinary practice/clinic. They can help give you advice regarding what to do in your particular situation.
