Why do cats sneeze?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Sneezing occurs when the mucous membranes of the nose become irritated. Most common causes of sneezing in the cat are cat flu (a viral infection similar to the human cold), and foreign bodies getting stuck in the nose (such as a blade of grass or grass seed). Dental disease can also cause sneezing due to root infections irritating the mucus membranes of the nose and sinuses.

As long as your cat is alert, eating and drinking as usual, and not constantly sneezing, you can await contacting a vet. However, it can be a good idea to take your cat’s rectal temperature daily (normal temperature is 38-39°C). You should remove any discharge (snot) daily and cleanse the area around the nose a couple times a day with the help of lukewarm water and cotton wool. If the sneezing does not improve within a few days, or if your cat starts to sneeze blood or pus you should consult a veterinarian. If your cat becomes tired, depressed, loses its appetite or refuses to drink you should seek veterinary care immediately.
