Ask the vet - Cat

Is it dangerous if cats catch and eat shrews?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Some shrew breeds carry a poison in their saliva. Most cats do not eat shrews because they smell and taste bad. The cats that do eat shrews do not seem to fall ill, however, some may feel sick.

Occasionally cats get bitten by shrews. This can result in swelling and inflammation of the skin and underlying structures at the site of the bite.
