Ask the vet - Cat
My cat is constantly hungry. What should I do?
Vet at FirstVet answers:
Some cats have a big appetite, are continuously trying to find something to eat, and unsurprisingly gain some unwanted weight. There are, however, certain diseases that can result in increased hunger; if your cat has suddenly become ravenous you should consult a veterinarian.
After your cat has been neutered it becomes easier for it to gain weight. This is due to the effect neutering has on metabolism. It is recommended to switch to a diet that is made for neutered cats to avoid unwanted weight gain.
If your cat is of the gluttonous type there are a few things you can do to try to get food off of its mind:
- Play with your cat when it begs for food. Some cats enjoy play and company as much as getting fed.
- Wet cat food (such as tinned cat food) contains a high water content which means that your cat can eat a larger amount of food which can help it feel satiated.
- Try spreading the cat food out on a large tray or use an activation toy you can put dry food into. This way it takes longer time for your cat to finish its meal and it also has to work out how to get to its food.
