Ask the vet - Cat

How do you know when it is time to put an old cat down?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

This is a difficult, but also a very important, question.

The first thing to consider is how your cat seems to be feeling. Is it still capable to do things it usually likes to do? Does it still play with its favourite toy, does it greet you like it normally does?

If your cat is sick – does it still have good days when it enjoys life and does things it usually does?

If after some thought you’ve realised that your cat is no longer doing the things it normally likes and does not seem to be enjoying itself anymore, then it is probably time to put it down.

If you are unsure, it is always best to book an appointment with a veterinarian who can examine your cat. There may be an underlying disease that could be treated.
