Ask the vet - Cat

Is garlic poisonous to cats?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Yes, ca 5g of garlic per kg body weight is poisonous to cats. Dried garlic is more concentrated than fresh garlic – smaller amounts are therefore toxic to your cat.

Garlic affects the red blood cells so that they are destroyed resulting in an anemia. If your cat consumes a large quantity of garlic the kidneys become affected. This is due to the effect the large load of broken down red blood cell particles have on the kidneys.
