Ask the vet - Cat

My cat has a stuffed and snotty nose, is there anything I can do to help it?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

It is likely your cat has cat flu. As long as it is alert, eating and drinking well, you can try to care for it at home.

Cats can only breathe through their nose so it is very important to make sure your cat has a patent airway by removing any secretions around its nares. Dab its nose with a damp towel to remove snot and dry the affected area. Offer your cat its favourite cat food.

You should contact a veterinarian if:

  • Your cat has difficulty breathing despite removing all of the visible secretions in and around its nose.
  • If your cat has a fever (rectal temperature above 39°C).
  • If it is difficult to remove the dried secretions or if there is any blood present in the snot.
  • If your cat does not improve within a week’s time.
