Ask the vet - Cat

My cat is running back and forth to its litter tray a lot and is peeing more frequently than usual. Should I be concerned?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

It is likely your cat is suffering from an inflammation of the lower urinary tract which may be caused by an inflammation of the urinary bladder, urinary chrystals/bladder stones or an urinary tract infection. These conditions can make your cat feel the urge to urinate, resulting in it running back and forth to its litter tray.

When a cat has an inflamed urinary bladder it usually only urinates very little or nothing at all each time it visits the litter tray. Blood can be seen in the urine and the cat may also start urinating inappropriately in places it normally does not. Stress triggers this condition; a new pet/family member, renovations and visits to the home, are a few examples of changes that your cat may react to.

Bladder stones and urinary chrystals can result in blockages, particularly in male cats. These cats cannot pass any or only very little urine. Blood can be present in the urine. This is an emergency medical condition that needs to be addressed immediately. If left untreated it can result in death. It is always best to contact and book an appointment with a veterinarian as soon as you notice any changes in your cat’s toileting behaviour.
