Ask the vet - Cat
My cat has swallowed a piece of thread/string. What should I do?
Vet at FirstVet answers:
There are several factors that are considered prior to taking action;
- li>How much time has passed since your cat swallowed the thread?
- How long was the string it swallowed?
- Was there a needle attached to the thread?
If you can see, or suspect that your cat has swallowed a piece of thread/string you should consult a veterinarian. NEVER pull it out. String is particularly dangerous because one end can become lodged in one part of the intestinal tract. The “free end” of the remaining string can then function as a drawstring, causing the intestines to bunch up. This is life threatening.
- Treatment and diagnostic requirements will vary depending on the length and type of string swallowed. For instance, x-rays will be required to see if your cat has swallowed a needle, and if it has, surgery will need to be performed. The same applies if the string has caused the intestinal tract to bunch up.
- If your cat is unwell, vomiting, has diarrhoea, a poor appetite or seems to have a painful abdomen it is likely it will require surgical removal of the string.
