Ask the vet - Cat

Is it best to slim down your cat by feeding it wet food or dry food?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

What is best depends on the indidivudal.

There are specially formulated diets available to help overweight cats lose weight. These are sold at veterinary clinics. The benefit of using such diets is that they are of high quality and have been scientifically proven to help cats lose weight without feeling hungry.

If your cat is particularly gluttonous it can help slowing down how quickly it eats by spreading its food out on a tray.

Exercise is an important part of losing weight. Make sure to play with your cat a little bit every day. If your cat only stays indoors you can try walking it with the help of a harness.

PLEASE OBSERVE that you should never starve your cat. Cats have very sensitive livers and if you starve one for just a day or two it can develop life threatening liver disease.

It is normal for a cat to lose 1-3% of its body weight per week.
