Ask the vet - Rabbit

My rabbit has a runny nose and is sneezing a lot. Does it have a cold/the flu?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

It is likely your rabbit has an upper airway infection. Rabbits can suffocate if they have a stuffed nose as they are obligate nasal breathers.

Upper airway infections are more commonly caused by bacterial infections in rabbits, as opposed to viral infections in people. Chronic sinus infections can result if a rabbit has issues with a stuffed/runny nose and sneezing for a longer period of time.

If you notice that your rabbit seems to have a cold it is best to seek veterinary care as soon as possible. The vet will likely want to take a sample from the nose to send for analysis in order to find out what type of infection is present.

Wipe away any nasal discharge as often as needed so that your rabbit does not develop difficulty breathing.
