Ask the vet - Rabbit

Is it normal for does to breathe rapidly after they have given birth?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

An uterine infection or a retained foetus can result in rapid breathing. This is partly due to pressure onto other organs including the lungs, as well as pain. It is important to rule out these conditions before assuming your doe is still recovering from the birthing process. Consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Airway diseases are relatively common in rabbits and can go unnoticed by owners. Does can show symptoms of airway infections once the strain from lactating for suckling kits commences. Additionally any rise in temperature in the environment can affect breathing. Adult rabbits are relatively heat sensitive.
