Ask the vet - Rabbit

What type of hay is good for rabbits?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Good hay for rabbits is one that is based on timothy grass.

Rabbits should not be given too much alfalfa hay due to its high calcium content. Rabbits often like alfalfa hay but it should only be given in small amounts and during restricted periods, for example, when the rabbit is unwell and has a poor appetite.

The quality of the hay is very important. Smell the hay before you give it to your rabbit. It should smell fresh in order for the rabbit to like it. If it is dusty or smells bad you should discard it. It is recommended to buy smaller bags of hay so that your rabbit has time to finish it before it loses both smell and flavour. It is sometimes cheaper to buy smaller amounts of hay from someone who runs a horse stable – the hay quality is likely to be good. Just make sure it is made from timothy grass.
