Ask the vet - Dog

My dog is itchy. What should I do?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

Itchiness can be caused by parasitic infections (such as mites or lice), allergies or even ear infections. Bacterial or fungal skin infections are also itchy and often secondary to other conditions.

Dogs scratch themselves with their paws, by licking or biting the affected area, or by rubbing themselves against, for example, carpets.

Sometimes a diagnosis can easily be made by being able to observe parasites. More commonly samples need to be taken from the skin to be able to find the cause. It is therefore always best to book an appointment with a veterinarian who examines your dog and performs the appropriate tests.

Shampooing with a skin calming, dog shampoo, and adding Omega 3 and 6 to the diet can help alleviate the itch. Using a buster collar is always recommended so that your dog is unable to lick or scratch the affected area as this will cause further complications. .
