Ask the vet - Dog
My dog has fleas. What should I do?
Vet at FirstVet answers:
There are many different types of fleas. Most of them are host specific but can infest other species. For the correct diagnosis of flea type it is best to let a veterinarian examine one underneath the microscope. Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva which worsens the itch. In these cases it can be difficult to find any fleas because only a few are required to result in a tremendous itch.
Treatment involves the use of a parasiticide. There are several different products available and most of them do not require a prescription. Consult a veterinarian for advice regarding which products to use. All animals in the household need to be treated and different species require different products.
It is very important to sanitise the environment in order to get rid of the fleas. Flea eggs and larvae survive a long time in the environment and most reinfections occur because the environment has not been properly treated. Washing all animal bedding and blankets in hot water and hoovering frequently are the minimum requirements. Flea bombs can help but ensure your pets are not indoors while these are used.
