Ask the vet - Dog

What is an eosinophilic granuloma and how do you treat it?

Vet at FirstVet answers:

An eosinophil is a type of white blood cell that is found in inflamed and infected tissue. It is also present in large numbers in allergic reactions and parasite infections. A granuloma is a solid accumulation of inflamed cells. An eosinophilic granuloma is one that consists of eosinophils. Granulomas look like wounds and are very itchy.

It is best to consult a veterinarian, and ideally one who specialises in dermatology, if your cat is suffering from eosinophilic granulomas.

Allergies, dietary sensitivities and flea infestations are common causes behind the development of eosinophilic granulomas.  Elimination hypoallergenic diets are recommended as treatment for cats that are suspected to suffer from food allergies. Cortisone is used frequently in all cases to alleviate the itch and skin irritation.
